"The Kitchen House" by Kathleen Grissom is our June title. Seven-year-old orphan, Lavinia, arrives on the steps of a tobacco plantation where she is to live and work with the slaves in the kitchen house. Under the care of Belle, the masters illegitimate daughter, Lavinia becomes deeply bonded with her adopted family, though her white skin sets her apart. Eventually she finds herself accepted into the big house where she finds herself straddling two different worlds.
Our Fireside Book Group meets every month on the third Wednesday at 2:00PM. We read a variety of fiction and non-fiction. Open to all. Please join us at any time.
